0.032s: the closest top three in WorldSSP300 history

The 2021 WorldSSP300 season saw the closest ever podium at Most in a thrilling finish to Race 2

As the 2021 FIM Supersport 300 World Championship continues to take various twists and turns, we saw a landmark achievement as the top three in Race 2 were separated by the smallest gap. 0.008s split race winner Jeffrey Buis (MTM Kawasaki) from Tom Booth-Amos (Fusport – RT Motorsports by SKM – Kawasaki), whilst Alejandro Carrion (Kawasaki GP Project) was a further 0.024s behind. It was a thrilling run to the line coming out of the final corner, with Carrion leading before Booth-Amos got ahead. However, it was Buis who, after being batted back to third, picked up a two-bike slipstream to edge ahead and win it by a nose.

Speaking about the finish and how he managed to go from third to first between the exit of the last corner and the finish line, Buis said: “I didn’t have the pace in the first laps, and lots of people were doing crazy things! I thought I’d sit back and then, in the last few laps, I worked my way up to the front, my plan worked, and I took the victory. You never know what is going to happen, but the aim is always to win.”

Tom Booth-Amos also commented on the run to the line, as he was narrowly denied: “I thought I had that race won, but in WorldSSP300 you never know! I am happy because we get some points back in the Championship after Race 1’s misfortune. Overall, a difficult weekend but finally, we finish on a strong point. I needed to take less risks and stop making stupid mistakes, like I did in the last two races. Had I not crashed in them, I’d have been leading the Championship.”

It was a strong weekend for Alejandro Carrion too, with the Spaniard becoming a prominent force at the front: “The race was crazier than Race 1! I started to push hard in the last four or five laps, trying to stay in second or third and then get the victory, but the slipstream in the last straight took it away from me. The year started with two broken bones and two zero-point-scoring rides at Misano, so it is good to have the support of the team, friends and family who believed in me.”

World Supersport 300 is known for titanically close fighting and finishing and in the fifth season of the class, there’s been countless memories made. However, with this closest finish, it demonstrates just how competitive the class is. Three different leaders on the same run to the line is a rare gem, but Most delivered in abundance during the Tissot Czech Round.
